First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Henry Bugbee Kane (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Bramhall House edition, published 1952; no later printing statement present. This mid-century Bramhall House edition of Cape Cod presents Thoreau's classic coastal narrative in a thoughtfully arranged text edited by Dudley C. Lunt, with an introduction by Henry Beston and illustrations by Henry Bugbee Kane. Thoreau's meditative account of walking the Cape including its shipwrecks, dunes, fishermen, storms, and solitude - remains one of the defining works of American nature writing, balancing empirical observation with philosophical reflection. The volume also incorporates Thoreau's 1857 excursion material, providing a fuller contextual reading of his final visit to the region. The book is Near Fine, with a tight, square spine; clean, unmarked pages; and only minor age-appropriate toning. The blue cloth boards are fresh and well preserved, with crisp spine titling and minimal handling wear. The dust jacket is Good, showing general surface wear, edge chipping, tape reinforcement at folds, and light soiling, but remains intact and visually presentable, with its illustrated lighthouse design still clear. This copy contains a decorative bookplate ('Ex Libris GHL') on the front endpaper, signed in ink beneath the device, along with a brief contemporary gift inscription ('to Gerald from Joyce, Oct. 1974') neatly written above. Also present is a loosely inserted business card (Jerome Laroche, General Contractor, Upper Marlboro, MD), likely placed by a prior owner; no ownership markings appear in the text block itself. These elements are noted for completeness and do not affect the structural integrity of the volume. Edition/Printing: This is the 1952 Bramhall House edition, printed in the United States, as stated on the copyright page. Not a first edition. No later printing statement noted beyond the original publication year. Complete, with all illustrations and index present.
