Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First printing of the true first edition, with a colour frontispiece portrait of Jonathan Trimblerigg, taken from a drawing by Edmond X. Kapp. ***Very good in Batik-style paper over blue cloth-covered boards with the original paper label to the spine. The label is somewh…at browned with age. Fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut, as called for). Top edge stained blue by the publisher to match the cloth. Boards clean but somewhat worn with age and handling. The wear is mainly to the head and tail of the spine and corners, but there are no tears or damage. Internally also very good, with clean unmarked pages - except for some foxing to the endpapers plus first and last leaves. The paper used is nice quality laid paper. The colour frontispiece portrait of Jonathan Trimblerigg is still protected by the original tissue-guard and is completely clean. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***210mm x 150mm. 320 pages. ***A Jekyll and Hyde like novel with world dominance thrown in. A piece of political satire, written by the brother of A.E.Housman, which was directed at Liberal political leader, Lloyd George. 'Laurence Housman (18 July 1865 - 20 February 1959) was an English playwright, writer and illustrator during the Victorian era. He studied art in London. He was a younger brother of the poet A. E. Housman. Housman has contributed himself as a feminist, dedicating his work mainly to the Suffrage movement in England. His activism was mainly creating works of art such as: creating banners, creating propaganda, writings and contributing to women's newspapers.' (Wik) ***First printing of the true first edition, in a very attractive binding consisting of batik paper over cloth covers. The early productions of Jonathan Cape have a hand-made quality to them. ***Of interest to collectors of Laurence Housman first edition titles, and those interested in the early publications of renowned publisher Jonathan Cape. A lovely early Cape production. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Kapp (Edmond X. Kapp) - colour frontispiece (illustrator).
