Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Thick quarto. x, 1,042pp. Illustrated with maps of itineraries. Black cloth with spine gilt. Ownership stamp and signature of noted American psychologist and anthropologist Henry Guze, (a founder of the American Academy of Psychotherapists, the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and co-founder of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex) on the front fly. Binding with light wear and soil, margins lightly toned, close to near fine. Volume I contains lengthy treatments of five cases (all names are fictional): Oscar Fleigelmann, Wilbur O'Lone, Ellis Walker, Albert Thornley, and Harry Bauman. Case material is taken from the Department for Criminal Insane (Howard Hall) at St. Elizabeths Hospital. A publisher's note on the front pastedown states that the book is only to be sold to professionals with a "direct and definite interest in medical and social problems." The lower portion of the note, completed in manuscript, states that this is copy number 353, and that it has been sold to Dr. Guy Payne, the Superintendant of Essex County Hospital, Cedar Grove, New Jersey (which was an asylum in the 1930s). An interesting glimpse into 1930s criminal psychology through five lengthy case studies, which range from 150 pages to over 300 pages each.
