The Department of Romance Languages of Harvard University, hoping to join in these global tributes, organized a conference entitled "Alfonso X of Castile, The Learned King" that took place in Cambridge on November 17 of that same year. Through the generous support of the Consul General of Spain in Boston, it was possible to invite distinguished scholars from the United States and Europe to impart their learning with a rather large assembly: Daniel Devoto from the Centre National des Recherches Scientifiques, Paris; Charles Fraker, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Israel J. Katz, Graduate Center, City University of New York; Jose Guerrero Lovillo, University of Seville; and Joseph T. Snow, University of Georgia, Athens. Harvard University was represented by Owen Gingerich (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics), Carlos Alberto Vega, and Francisco Marquez-Villanueva. Stephen Gilman, Professor Emeritus of Harvard University, chaired a panel discussion.
