Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. This fine unmarked copy is bound in green cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bright and square. The author has signed the f.e.p. with a warm inscription to a member of Auchmuty's family. The unclipped dust wrapper i…s lightly sunned to the spine but still near fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. James Johnston Auchmuty CBE, FRHistS, FAHA (29 November 1909 - 15 October 1981) was an Irish born historian and inaugural vice-chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Australia. Due to poor eyesight Auchmuty was unable to join the armed forces, however he was recruited by MI6 and performed intelligence work and pro-British cultural propaganda in Ireland. Auchmuty decided to leave Ireland after World War II to avoid being interned for working on non-Irish interests. He then worked as an associate professor of history at Farouk I University at Alexandria, Egypt teaching and continuing his work of political reporting and propaganda until the overthrow of King Farouk in 1952. British intelligence contacts then found Auchmuty a position as senior lecturer in history at the New South Wales University of Technology, Sydney (later the University of New South Wales) where he moved later in 1952. He was no longer an intelligence operative. In 1954 Philip Baxter, the university's director, sent Auchmuty, as associate professor, to head the school of humanities and social sciences at Newcastle University College. In 1955 he was promoted to professor of history and deputy-warden of the University College, becoming warden in 1960 and foundation vice-chancellor when the college gained autonomy as the University of Newcastle in 1965 Ref DDD6. In new condition except for a signed gift message in front to Patrick Reytians (artist) possibly from author. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Of course,…in those far off days, the whole of the education system, both within the family and in the community at large, was based on a respect for constituted authorities and supported by more than a modi- cum of fear of punishment or, worse, humiliation. Those of us who are, survived it however, not especially resentful, particularly when it gave us a sense of achievement and of triumph over minor adversity. Indeed, one of the relatively few pleasures in growing older is to see one's life experiences from an increasingly broad vantage point and to begin to understand the realities behind the fa?ades. And this is one of the great virtues of Ken Dutton's biography of lan Henning. It brings to life the man we knew but it at the same time shows us how little we each individually knew of him. It pulls together the fragments- -some so familiar but others quite unsuspected -to build a coherent pi.
