Österreichische Forschungsreise nach Australien und vor allem in die Südsee (Tasimboko, Sawo, Tatube, Salomonen, Tuilagi, Melanesien). ? 1895 stach Kapitän Mauler von Pula aus in See und als erste Station war Australien vorgesehen. Die Instruktionen des Kapitäns waren hauptsächlich kommerzieller und wissenschaftlicher Natur. Für die Firma Krupp sollte Nickeleisenlagerstätten ausfindig gemacht werden und in Besitz genommen werden. Dabei sollte äußerst diplomatisch vorgegangen werden. 1896 verließ die Albatros mit Geologen und anderen Wissenschaftlern an Bord Sydney und machte sich in das Zielgebiet ? die Salomonen ? auf. Mauler drillte seine Besatzung, die vor allem zum militärischen Schutz der Wissenschaftler vorgesehen waren. Weiters wurden strenge Regeln nicht nur an Bord, sondern vor allem für die Landgänge ausgegeben. So sollte sich die Besatzung von den Einheimischen fern halten, keinen Verkehr mit ihren Frauen haben, keine Gegenstände der Einheimischen berühren, usw. Nach der Landung auf Guadalcanal wurden Einheimische als Führer und Träger ausgewählt und nach Aufbruch der Gruppe, teilten sich diese. Eine Gruppe solllte den Tatuve ersteigen, die andere im Lager bleiben. Beide Gruppen wurden plötzlich von Einheimischen angegriffen. Die österreichische Besatzung hatte 5 Tote und einige Verletzte zu beklagen und trat die Reise nach Australien an, wo die Verwundeten versorgt wurden.
