Danach studierte er Landschaftsplanung an der Gesamthochschule Kassel und promovierte mit einer Doktorarbeit zur Pflanzensoziologie. 1974 - 94 war er Mitinhaber von Stöckli, Kienast & Koeppel, Landschaftsarchitekten, und 1980 - 1991 Professor am Interkantonalen Technikum Rapperswil; 1992 - 1997 Professor für Landschaftsarchitektur und Leiter des Institutes für Landschaft und Garten an der Universität Karlsruhe; ab 1995 Mitinhaber von Kienast, Vogt und Partner, Landschaftsarchitekten in Zürich und Bern, und ab 1997 Professor für Landschaftsarchitektur an der Eidgenössischen Hochschule in Zürich. Dieter Kienast verstarb im Dezember 1998 in Zürich. Wer Dieter Kienast gekannt hat, freut sich ganz besonder über dieses schöne Büchlein.
