About this Item: [KIMONO DESIGN - MANUSCRIPT]. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" oblong design book, bound in single backed sheets on the short side with string (not fukuro-toji). With a brushed title label, sealed throughout but otherwise anonymous. (As often happens with manuscripts the name of the shop which used it as a pattern book has been excised). There are 25 black and white design sketches for elaborate kimono. More of a Kano, rather than a Rimpa style. The album probably dates from the first half of the 19th Century. A lovely item which suffers from very bad worming throughout. Though the damage is worse at the extremities of the work, holes are shot through the paper and effect the design images, as well. Sold with all faults. Seller Inventory # 53918

About this Item: Tanukiya Sakichi, Draper, ca. 1870]., [Kyoto?:, 1870. Folio. 9 x 12.75 in. [52 pp (unpaginated).] composed of heavy rice paper stock, w/ 416 katazome cotton samples, sized 2.25 x 2.5 in., all labeled in manuscript. Textured blue paper covers, punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ green silk thread (worn title paper label on front cover obscuring original manuscript writing, dustsoiling, edgewear), still a VG- sound copy, w/ Draper's signature in sumi on rear pastedown. This splendid Katagami & Katazome kimono sample catalogue compiled during the early Meiji period by the draper, Tanukiya Sakichi filled with beautifully executed indigo-dyed cotton kimono fabric samples. Indigo-dyed kimono textiles have been one of the primary colour choices by Japanese drapers, weavers, and designers for centuries -- not only does Indigo dye adhere very well to cotton threads, but Japanese farmers and workers believed that it repelled insects and snakes. These beautiful geometric and ornamental designs are created by dyeing textiles with a resistant rice paste applied through carefully prepared Katagami paper stencils. Once the paste was applied, the stencils were removed and the fabric allowed to dry, after which is was coated with a sizing solution of soybean liquid, and later the Indigo applied. Once the rice paste has been washed away, the stencil pattern would remain. These Katazome textiles were very popular as they offerend an inexpensive way for over-all patterns similar to expensive painted silks, and woven brocades to be achieved on cotton. About this Item: Honda Ichijiro, Meiji 33 (1900)]., [Kyoto:, 1900. Tall 8vo. [34 pp (unpaginated)]. Title in red & black, colophon printed on verso of last leaf. With 32 beautifully hand-coloured woodblock printed kimono designs, printed on double-page Japanese style, nearly all retaining original tissue guards. Illustrated softcovers, punch-sewn at gutter margins in japanese style, w/ brown silk thread, hand-lettered title on front cover (minor shelfwear, rubbing), still a VG copy. First edition of this installment in Honda Ichijiro's kimono design books in late Meiji-era Japan. These designs by Seiko Uneo are beautifully wrought images of painted silk kimonos. The themes illustrated in designs reflect the Japanese sensibility of nature with emphasis on flowers, bamboo, seaside birds, landscape scenes, flying cranes, cranes, birds flying through trees, and many with hand-applied metallic inks. The hand-colouring of the woodblock prints are exceptional, and obviously were heavily in demand during the Meiji era, with superb composition and design elements. About this Item: Tezuka, Honcho 5-chome, ca. 1830-1840]., [Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture:, 1830. Two vols. Tall 8vo. [40; 30 pp (unpaginated)] composed of nearly translucent Japanese style double-page rice paper, with chain lines, all pages illustrated w/ 70 hand-painted designs throughout. Original dark purple softcovers, manuscript labels on front covers, sewn at gutter margin in Japanese style w/ silk thread (wear, scuffing & soiling to covers, wear to spine, some wear to corners, thumbing & creasing to interior leaves, couple closed tears on covers, wear to calligraphy, some thumbing & minor soiling to corners of leaves), still a good exemplar of these fragile manuscripts, w /the original designs very bright and striking, w/ ownership signature in sumi on rear pastedown, indicating that this set was given to Taro Tezuka, the 20th generation of the Tezuka family had been given the books by his grandfather (the 18th generation), small seal in one volume reads Shinshu (Nagano) Matsumoto, Honcho, Tezuka family. These unique and delicately beautiful kimono design manuscripts were executed during the late Edo period in Matsumoto City, one of the major silk textile manufacturing regions of Japan, especially famous for their yuzen dyeing process. These subtle and exquisite designs are reflective of the stunning Ukiyo-e artwork generated by such Japanese artists as Hokusai in the late Tokugawa period. The strict sumptuary laws passed by the Shogun against the merchant class prevented them from using their wealth to increase status, so some would display their wealth by commissioning beautifully painted silk kimonos. Despite the constant attempts by the government to control the popular designs & fashion, the influences of No Theatre costumes often pushed the envelope on acceptable designs. The original designs by the Matsumoto City artist include flowing patterned silk pennants, fans, jewelry, rice farmers, ducks swimming, butterflies, cranes, an especially nice one of a kimono design manuscript fluttering in the wind, bamboo, ornamental collars & wreaths, deer, women picking tea leaves, landscapes presaging the later travel views by Hiroshige, and more. All of the designs are within outlines, with many at the beginning showing designs paced on the okumi (front lower panel of the kimono), many on the Fuki & ushiro-migoro (rear), as well as several offering full rear views of the entire kimono back in outline. The Tezuka family emerged to prominence in the Edo Period as merchants and designers specializing in wholesale textiles and fabrics, especially silks. One of the family homes is now maintained as a museum in Narai Post Town, Nagano Prefecture. These well achieved, large scale gouaches display an array of Meiji design sensibility featuring natural subject matter intertwined with geometric and abstract elements. Although not named on the title, this album was originally acquired as part of an archive from Miyake Sijiro Shoten. Covers with some edge wear, some of the gouaches a little scuffed, but overall they are clean and bright and well persevered in the album. Seller Inventory # 164052
