Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In recent years, Islam - whether via the derivatives of 'Political Islam' or 'Islamism' - has come to be seen as an 'activist' force in social and political spheres worldwide. What such representations have neglected is the strong countervailing tradition of political quietism. Political quietism in Islam holds that it is not for Muslims to question or oppose their leaders. Rather, the faithful should concentrate on their piety, prayer, religious rituals and personal quest for virtue. This book is the first to analyze the history and meaning of political quietism in Islamic societies. It takes an innovative cross-sectarian approach, investigating the phenomenon and practice across both Sunni and Shi'i communities. Contributors deconstruct and introduce the various forms of political quietisms from the time of the prophetic revelations through to the contemporary era. Chapters cover issues ranging from the politics of public piety among the women preachers in Saudi Arabia, through to the legal discourses in the Caucasus, the different Shi'i communities in Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and Pakistan, and the Gülen movement in Azerbaijan. The authors describe a wide range of political quietisms and assess the continuing significance of the tradition, both to the study of Islam and to the modern world today.

Printed by Dar Al-Asfahani & Co, Jeddah. 15, (1)pp English text including 6 b/w photos showing Faisal either in formal portrait, at prayer, or among the visiting dignitaries. Wraps very good, rubbed to the spine, interiors fine. Faisal delivered this speech at the banquet he gave in honour of notable pilgrims and heads of official Hajj Missions on the evening of 6 Dhul Hijja 1393 (Sunday 30 Dec 1973) at the Bat-Haa Palace in Mecca. His words were especially significant, spoken during OAPEC's oil embargo on countries that had supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War. With Faisal taking a leading role in the embargo his talking points here focus on Islamic solidarity, a warning to Zionists, a refutation of Jewish claims to the land, praise for Arab solidarity shown during the War, appreciation of Afro-Asian support, and the universality of Islam. This appears to be extremely rare, unrecorded on Worldcat, which lists a Malay language edition of Faisal's speech in the previous year.

Black and white gelatin silver photograph, 195 x 137 mm. Mounted on card emblazoned with the blind-stamped arms of Saudi Arabia and further housed in matting. Signed in blue ink on lower margin of photograph. Signed just four years before his assassination: a formal black and white photograph of HH King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, with his signature below, dated in both Hijri and Gregorian calendars to the 23rd of December 1971 (6/11/1291). Tipped onto a card embossed with the arms of Saudi Arabia. - Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was a son of the first ruler of Saudi Arabia, HH King Abdulaziz. In 1964 he wrested control of the country from his elder brother HH King Saud in a bloodless coup, in which he was supported by the royal family and the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia. Saud went into exile, and Faisal was formally named king; he would rule Saudi Arabia for just over ten years, until he was shot by one of his nephews in 1975. His political life, however, spanned decades, starting when he was no older than thirteen, and his influence first as prince, then crown prince, and subsequently as king was immense. During his rule, Faisal was known both as religiously conservative and as a reformer, who brought Saudi Arabia further into the modern age. - Tipped onto card; in excellent condition.

Oblong 4to (333 x 230) mm. Photo album with 12 baryte paper prints (125 x 110 mm) and 1 press photo (225 x 191 mm), the latter captioned, stamped and dated. Blue full percaline with gilt cover ornaments. Cord binding. A fine ensemble of photographs documenting the historic state visit to Iraq by King Saud of Saudi Arabia in May 1957, apparently photographed and assembled by a member of the Iraqi entourage closely involved throughout the visit. King Faisal II of Iraq and his Prime Minister Nuri As-Said met with King Saud to discuss the Pan-Arab movement led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, involving anti-monarchist efforts in Jordan. Eventually, talks in Baghdad were wound up "with a pledge to coordinate resistance to communism and a warning that no Arab state should meddle in the affairs of its neighbors" (caption of the press photograph). - The collection includes previously unseen pictures of the monarchs' arrival by car and carriage respectively, their mutual exchange of greetings, and the state dinner, as well as the subsequent talks held in the palace garden. - Not traced in the Keystone or Hulton/Getty press photo archives. In excellent condition.

Add to basketThree rare press photographs dating from 1969 to 1971, which show HRH King Faisal (1906-1975) visiting the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and Cairo and give a composite picture of Saudi foreign policy under his rule: receptive to the west, avowedly anti-communist, and pan-Islamic above all. King Faisal's belief in the importance of Palestinian statehood saw Saudi Arabia lead OPEC's 1973 oil embargo against numerous western countries which supported Israel. Despite this, he sought to maintain positive relations with the West, to his country's benefit. The first image in this set was taken during his state visit to the United Kingdom in May 1967. The image depicts the king smiling and waving as he sits beside Queen Elizabeth and opposite Prince Philip in a horse-drawn carriage. The king famously considered communism to be completely incompatible with Islam and deemed the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China to be major threats to Saudi Arabia. In 1971, he made a landmark visit to anti-communist Taiwan, where he met Chiang Kai-Shek and spoke of Islam as a cultural bridge which had historically united the Arabs and the Chinese. In the second image in the set, he is seen watching military exercises from a motorcade in northern Taiwan. The figure to his right is the Taiwanese Vice President, Yen Chia-Ken. The final image depicts King Faisal sitting next to Colonel Mu'ammar Gaddafi of Libya, President 'Abd al-Rahman al-Iryani of North Yemen, and President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, at the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League in Cairo in 1970. The summit was convened because of the Jordanian Civil War and the violence which erupted between the PLO and the army of King Hussein. Nasser would die only a few hours after this photograph was taken, and the image captures an extraordinary moment of unity. 3 silver gelatin prints (each 180 x 150 mm to 200 x 130 mm), later laid down on decorative card mounts (each 310 x 250 mm). Photographs with minor surface abrasions; mounts with slight water damage, some toning and foxing, spots of worming, edges brittle and chipped. In good condition.

8vo. 1½ pp. Rare, early autograph letter by the ten-year-old Faisal to Roy (i. e. F. Roy Deeley, a collector of autographs): "Thank you so very much for the snow-storms, I was delighted with them, and it is most kind of you to have taken so much trouble to find them. I hope you will have a very happy Xmas now that the war is over. Are you still working in the same factory, and how old are you now? Will you send me a snap-shot of yourself some time [.]". - A couple of very light, minor stains to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature.
Saudi Arabian leadership during a formative period of Cold War diplomacy and postcolonial statecraft. Archive of six original silver gelatin black-and-white press photographs depicting Image sizes range from approximately 5.5" x 7.5" to 7" x 9", issued between 1957 and 1974. The photographs portray King Saud, King Faisal, and a youthful Prince Mashhur, captured at Arab League summit conferences in Cairo, Algiers, and Rabat, as well as during high-level state visits with international leaders including Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, King Hassan II, Hafez al-Assad, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. One image documents King Saud departing Brigham Hospital in Boston following medical treatment in November 1957; another captures a notably intimate moment between King Saud and Prince Mashhur en route to the airport with President Eisenhower. All photographs bear contemporary press captions and editorial notations on the versos; one example retains ink markings in the margin, not affecting the image. Taken within tight editorial timeframes for wire services and newspaper distribution, these photographs functioned as instruments of diplomatic image-making, shaping public perception of Saudi Arabia's monarchy during an era defined by Arab nationalism, superpower rivalry, and oil geopolitics. The summit images situate Saudi leadership within the shifting alliances of the Arab world, particularly amid tensions between conservative monarchies and republican movements aligned with Nasserism. The visual juxtaposition of Saudi rulers with figures such as Nasser and Sadat underscores the kingdom's negotiation of pan-Arab identity while maintaining dynastic continuity. Meanwhile, the Boston hospital photograph reflects the transnational dimension of royal health care and the kingdom's growing ties to the United States, emblematic of the strategic U.S.-Saudi relationship consolidated in the mid-twentieth century. The image of King Saud embracing Prince Mashhur humanizes monarchical authority, presenting dynastic succession and familial continuity as central to state legitimacy. Very good overall, with strong tonal range and clear contrast; minor surface wear and light handling; manuscript press notations to versos and occasional marginal ink markings, not affecting the photographic fields. A compelling and cohesive press archive documenting Saudi Arabia's ruling house at the intersection of Arab summit diplomacy, Cold War alignment, and the cultivation of royal image in the international press.
