Poetry by mother and sister of Rudyard Kipling (names not stated within), largely on religious or Indian themes. B&W title page illustrated in frieze or bas relief by 'JLK'. This might be John Lockwood Kipling (husband of Alice). Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. They have deckled edges. Price in pencil to FEP. Title page tissue guard is tanned and foxed. A few edge tears and creases, as expected with rough cut paper. Block edges notably foxed. Boards have some moderate edge wear, with slight bumping to corners and minor bumping to spine ends. Slight brown spots to edges. Subtle gradient of sunning overall. Spine noticeably sunned; lettering faint. Boards are moderately bowed.

[Imprint on wrapper only, printed at] Lahore, The "Civil and Military Gazette". No Date,  A very good and entirely unsophisticated copy of an outstanding rarity: the author's second book. With some minor stains to the front cover, some old soft creases to the fore edge corners, gentle rounding and softening of fore-edge corners, early pencil annotations either identifying the poets being "echoed" or identifying poems as R.K.'s original work. A sound, unrestored copy in an early linen folding box.  Kipling was only eighteen, but was already writing for the Civil and Military Gazette when he commissioned this in an edition he describes as being of 150 copies. Richards notes that Kipling claimed that the Gazette printed the book for free, as he was a staff member, and that not only was it well reviewed, but "the edition sold out and the unanticipated profits enabled Kipling to buy a new horse". There is some dispute about how many of the poems themselves (most of which were parodies, or "echoes" of other authors) were Rudyard's and which were by his 16 year sold sister Alice, known as "Trix". She claimed eleven, while Rudyard believed that she only contributed seven: Richards is able to rebutt her claim to two of the disputed poems by finding them in Kipling's manuscript notebooks. [2, blank], [2, title, verso blank], [2, index], [1]-72, [2, blank] pp. Some light foxing throughout, first blank leaf with early ink signature. Publisher's light brown wrappers, front wrapper with tile design printed in black. lower corner (1 1/8 x 3/4 inch; 28 x 19 mm.) torn away, spine expertly and invisibly restored, still a near fine copy. Housed in a red cloth chemise within a full red morocco, velvet lined 'jewel-case'. Spine with five raised bands lettered in gilt in compartments, brass lock. First edition of Kipling's very rare second book; the "two writers" of the title were Kipling and his sister Alice ("Trix"). Of the 39 poems, mostly "echoes" or imitations of well-known poets, 32 are ascribed to Kipling and 7 to his sister. First published in Lahore in August 1884, the volume appeared when Kipling, then 18 years old, had been living in India for nearly two years. It was printed by the Civil and Military Gazette Press, where Kipling served as sub-editor, and he personally oversaw its production. In December 1883, Kipling's mother brought his 15-year-old sister, Trix, from England to join him. Together, they engaged in a series of literary experiments and playful compositions, producing a substantial collection of poems-primarily parodies of well-known poets-by the spring of 1884.
