Estudió filología alemana en Viena y en 1920 se trasladó a Berlín. Además de escribir numerosos relatos y novelas -como Hotel Savoy (1924), Fuga sin fin (1927), A diestra y siniestra (1929), Job (1930), La marcha Radetzky (1932), El peso falso (1937), La Cripta de los Capuchinos (1938) y La leyenda del santo bebedor (1939)-, llevó a cabo una intensa actividad periodística, en particular para el Frankfurter Zeitung, por encargo del cual, a partir de 1923, realizó reportajes sobre Albania, Polonia, la Unión Soviética y otros países. En 1933, sus obras dejaron de publicarse en Alemania y se estableció en París.
