Seul le souvenir*, c'est ainsi que Lisa Fittko en parle dans son ouvrage "Weg ùber die Pyrenâen". Comment peut-on rendre visible l'invisible? Peut-on photographier le souvenir? Comment les pierres peuvent-elles parler des prisonniers qui les ont foulées? Birgit Kleber s'est consacrée à la recherche du passé. Durant toute une semaine, elle s'est promenée dans Gurs, en quête d'inscriptions et de traces, ne sachant pas si elle allait découvrir quelque chose. Et pourtant, elle l'a trouvée cette route et, au bout, le cimetière juif. Alors elle a photographié. Est-il une image plus usée que celle-ci - route, chemin, rails, regard vers l'horizon au-delà des champs - connue grâce aux innombrables documents existants sur les camps de l'époque nazie? Documents de l'impuissance. Comme si l'histoire était palpable, comme si elle était concevable. Birgit Kleber est allée au-devant du cliché, transformant l'image concrète du chemin en une photo presque abstraite. Le flou, le grain grossier laissent pressentir mais ne prétendent pas savoir. La photo est divisée en quatre parties et c'est à celui qui regarde l'image du passé de les assembler lui-même, à partir des fragments de souvenir. On ne peut pas servir l'histoire taillée sur mesure pour la rendre plus digeste.C'est une nourriture lourde. La méthode a de la méthode. Les portraits ont eux-mêmes quelque chose d'abstrait, de difficilement accessible. Là encore, et jusqu'à un certain point, le concret fait place au général. Il ne s'agit pas de portraits individuels: chaque photo fait partie d'un tout. Toujours le même format, 87x87 cm, carré, sévère. Format préféré de la photographe parce que revêtant quelque chose de magique par son côté statique.* Alors que le rectangle empiète toujours quelque peu sur l'espace, le carré, lui, est plus neutre*. Et ce que la photographe recherche par l'utilisation du noir et blanc qu'elle apprécie, c'est la rigueur, la pureté et l'évidence, l'abstrait, le poids.
