"Die Behandlung schwerer Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen ist in den letzten Jahren im Bundesgebiet aus mehreren Gründen besonders problematisch geworden: wegen der stark angestiegenen Zahl dieser folgenschweren Verletzungen - wenigstens 15 000 bis 30 000 pro Jahr -, wegen der Überfüllung und Personalnot der Krankenhäuser und wegen des Umstandes, daß bisher nur etwa l0 % dieser Schwerverletzten an den Fortschritten der Spezial-Untersuchungen und -Behandlung teilhaben, die für diese Verletzungsfolgen in den letzten Jahren entwickelt worden sind. Das Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Sozialordnung (BMA) veranlaßte daher eine Untersuchung über die Ursachen und Auswirkungen von Fehldiagnosen und verspäteter Behandlung bei schweren Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen. Während diese Fragen für den Einzelfall relativ gut zu beantworten sind, bereitet die Frage nach der Gesamt-Häufigkeit der vermeidbaren Folgen erhebliche Schwierigkeiten, da bisher keine allgemeine Statistik über die jährliche Zahl von Kopfverletzungen existiert, besonders fehlt die Zahl der schweren Schädel - Hirn-Verletzungen. Eine solche Erhebung würde noch mehrere Jahre in Anspruch nehmen, also kostbare Zeit beanspruchen, die nicht verloren werden darf. Deshalb wurden in dem vorliegenden Bericht so weit wie möglich statistische Unterlagen und klinische Beobachtungen über die Häufigkeit und Behandlung schwerer Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen zusammengestellt. Der Bundesverband der Ortskrankenkassen, der Hauptverband der gewerblichen Berufsgenossenschaften und das Statistische Bundesamt haben uns dabei in dankenswerter Weise unterstützt. In den Fragen der Organisation und Mindestausrüstung haben uns E. Goetz, H. Junghanns, H. Lauterbach, A. Lob, H. Noeske, W. Scheid, A. Wolf, L. Zukschwerdt und K. J. Zülch vom Unterausschuß für Unfallhirngeschädigte des Ärztlichen Sachverständigenbeirats beim Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Sozialordnung beraten, wofür wir hier nochmals besonders danken. Die statistischen und klinischen Unterlagen können schon jetzt eine wenigstens orientierende Gesamtschau über Größe und Auswirkung des Problems der Behandlung schwerer Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen geben. Die dabei ermittelten Schätzergebnisse sind sicher unterste Grenzwerte und lassen ein noch größeres Ausmaß des Problems vermuten. Um wenigstens diesen voraussehbaren Schwierigkeiten zu begegnen, wurde ein begründeter Plan zur Organisation der Behandlung schwerer Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen für etwa die nächsten zehn Jahre entwickelt." 3 half leather vols in elephant folio (48 x 33 cm) with gilt lettering on the spine; complete and extremely rare edition in 5 deliveries from 1829-45, text pages in Latin and 50 hand-coloured engraved plates. Compare also Nissen ZBI, 1247. This highly ambitious work was edited over the long period from 1829 to 1845. In a contemporary review of J. Ch. F. Klug's (1775-1856) work, the elaborate publication is highly praised, but with the objection that it would be hardly affordable for private individuals and would be reserved for universities and museums. Provenance: From the library of Italian entomologist and hymenoptera specialist Paolo Magretti (1854-1913). Condition: Binding with minor signs of wear, library label on spine, only 3 of the 5 original delivery envelopes are bound in, text pages sporadic, but mostly with minor staining, plates in excellent condition with unique fine colouring!
