[Japanese folk literature] ORIGINAL 'CHIRIMEN BON' CREPE PAPER BOOK, A REPRINT THUS. Sextodecimo (15 x 10cm), pp.[19]. Washi leaves with text and woodblock-printed colour illustrations by Kobayashi Eitaku. Pictorial woodblock design and black titles to cover. With fukuro-toji pouch binding and Yamato-toji silk stab-ties. Toning and light spotting to one or two leaves. Small puncture mark and type error to second leaf. Collector's pencilled '75' inscription to penultimate leaf. Illustrations somewhat faded. Some wear to covers, creases to inner-edges. Spine partially eroded. Very good. Takejir Hasegawa was a notable Japanese publisher during the Meiji and Taish eras. With the goal to spread Japanese culture across the globe, he published a series of small crepe-paper bound Japanese fairy stories which were translated into such languages as German, Spanish, French, and English by foreign contemporaries living in Japan. He also published calendars, postcards, and woodblock print albums. This edition is illustrated by Kobayashi Eitaku, a master in Ukiyo-e.
