The illustrator, Kobayashi Eitaku (1843-1890), was close friends with Kawanabe Kyosai and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, masters of Kano School painting in the late Tokugawa and Meiji eras, as well as with other western painters such as Charles Wirgman.
