Abt der Reichsabtei Weingarten, Präses der Benediktineruniversität Salzburg war einer der produktivsten Autoren Oberschwabens seiner Zeit. 'Doch dieses Werk ist in der Region fast gänzlich unbekannt. Kaum ein Exemplar blieb in den hiesigen Bibliotheken oder Archiven erhalten; nur ganz wenige kurze Erwähnungen sind in der Sekundärliteratur zu finden. Im Zuge der Säkularisation des Klosters zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde die Weingartener Klosterbibliothek aufgelöst. Von Kobolts Werken sind heute nur noch wenige Exemplare in größeren Bibliotheken nachzuweisen.' (Norbert Kruse) 'Die Groß- und Kleine Welt stellt mit Sicherheit Kobolts Hauptwerk dar. Es enthält eine enzyklopädische Beschreibung der gesamten, von Gott geschaffenen und gelenkten Welt. Die drei anderen Teile betreffen die kleine Welt, den Mikrokosmos (Microcosmu[m]). Der zweite Teil handelt Von den Menschen (S. 150-294), der dritte Von den unvernuenftigen Thieren (S. 295-538), der vierte Von den wachsenden Dingen (S. 539-673), von den Pflanzen also.- Hinzuweisen ist auf den einzigen lokalen Bezug in Kobolts Werk: Hier geht er auf den einzigartigen Besitz der Weingartener Abtei ein, die Reliquie vom Seitenblut Christi, die dort verehrt wird. Dem Absatz über das Blut des Menschen folgt ein Absatz Von dem H. Seiten-Blut Christi auf Erden (S. 257-264). Hier vorliegend das letzte seiner acht Werke, herausgegeben im stolzen Alter von 71 Jahre zwei Jahre vor seinem Tode. Als einziges Werk Kobolts erfuhr es 16 Jahre später noch eine zweite Auflage. Die Texte sollen 'ein Anreitzung [] seyen, die [] verborgene Wahrheit und Sitten-Lehr [.] anzubringen.' Unter seinen Geschichten sind auch so bekannte zu finden wie die vom Apfelschuss des Wilhelm Tell (Nr. 83), die von den Weibern von Weinsberg (Nr. 95) oder die von Vater, Sohn und Esel (Nr. 154); letztere hat Johann Peter Hebel 1808 unter dem Titel 'Der seltsame Spazierritt' herausgegeben. Weiterhin sind Legenden zu finden wie die von der heiligen Elisabeth und dem Bettler (Nr. 17), vom unschuldig gehenkten und wiederbelebten Jakobs-Pilger (Nr. 103) oder von der heiligen Kümmernis (Nr. 98). Darunter ist auch die von Livius stammende Geschichte des Menenius Agrippa vom Magen und den Gliedern (Nr. 120).
