Als Autor wurde der aus Prag gebürtige Joseph Seligmann Kohn identifiziert, der unter vielen Pseudonymen literarische, populärwissenschaftliche und satirische Texte verfaßte. Die ersten Kapitel des Romans zeigen den Helden Nathan Meier in einer Reihe von Episoden, die an den Schelmenroman des Franzosen Alain-Rene Lesage Gil Blas de Santillane anknüpfen, von dem der Titel entlehnt ist. Der Leser gewinnt jedoch immer mehr den Eindruck, das Hauptanliegen des Autors bestehe darin, die sich wandelnden oder aussterbenden Gewohnheiten der böhmischen luden noch einmal genau für die Nachwelt festzuhalten.
