The author argues that hypocausts were used exclusively for drying, and not for heating. The author reinterprets archaeological evidence to demonstrate that hypoca…usts were only found under ventilated floors and within the walls of heated rooms, not within actual rooms, and furthermore, that means of introducing hot air into rooms via hypocausts has never been discovered. The author argues that Romans heated their living spaces with braziers, a method consistent with archaeological finds. This book challenges a long-held assumption about Roman architecture and offers new insights into the daily lives of Romans.
