Da er als Deutscher keine Forschungserlaubunis in den…Überseegebieten bekam unternahm er Reisen in die Sowjetunion und war 1923/ 24 Gastprofessor in Omsk. 1933 verließ er Deutschland um in Peru seine Arbeit fortzusetzen. Schon früher interessierte ihn der Zusammenhang von Kultur und Krankheit.
