Schulthess war auch Mitbegründer und erster Chefarzt der 1912 eröffneten Klinik Balgrist, eines "Schweizerischen Vereins für krüppelhafte Kinder". Das Orthopädische Institut zog 1896 von der Löwenstrasse in einen Neubau an der Stadtzürcher Neumünsterallee, im Laufe der Zeit in angrenzende Villen, und seit 1995 steht die heutige Schulthess Klinik in modernsten Gebäulichkeiten zwischen Balgrist und Burghölzli an der Lengghalde am Stadtrand von Zürich. Im Sommer 2006 hat die Schulthess Klinik dort einen Erweiterungsbau realisiert, um der stetig wachsenden Zahl der Operationen und medizinischen Dienstleistungen gerecht zu werden. Schulthess betrieb die Klinik zusammen mit PD Dr. August Lüning und seinem Schwiegersohn Dr. Eugen Hallauer, der die konservativ geprägten Behandlungsmethoden seines Schwiegervaters fortsetzte.
