A pioneer in this field, the Commercial Bank believes that it has contributed to the creation of a splendid tradition which has raised the artistic standards of publishing and enriched the country with books which provide a stimulus for creative activity in Greece. Rottmann, whose water colours are presented in this album, was one of the well-known artists of 19th century Germany; he was painting at a time when the hearts and souls of educated Europeans were vibrating with sympathy for Greece which, after the titanic struggle of the War of Independence, had become the focus of international interest. Ludwig I of Bavaria, the philhellenic king, desirous of adorning the arcades in the palace gardens with oil paintings of southern landscapes, commissioned Rottmann, who had previously painted Italian landscapes for this purpose, to travel to Greece in 1834 in order to carry out a detailed program of painting characteristic historical Greek sites. The water colours presented here are the ar- tist's preliminary studies, his notes for the final oil paintings which were to be placed on the north side of the arcade in the palace gar- dens; their distinction lies in delicate hues and marvellous rendering of Greek light (.).
