With a signed presentation inscription from the author, this is a wonderful example of the scarce expanded edition of Jacques Delille's poetical work on the grandeur of English gardens. With a handwritten inscription from the author to the verso of the half title. The inscription is in Latin, and addressed to 'Joanni Jacobo', and Delille similarly signs the work with the Latin of his given name 'Jacobus Delille'. Signed works by Delille are very scarce.Though published in London, this is in the original French. An English language translation was not published until 1805.First published in 1782 and going through many editions in the intervening years, this scarce new edition is greatly expanded by over 1,000 lines.A popular poem on garden design, in which he Delille extolls the new approach to landscape gardening pioneered by William Kent, and offers an account of his favourites amongst the major English gardens.Illustrated with a frontispiece.Retaining the half title.Delille barely survived the slaughter of the French Revolution and lived for some years outside France, including three years in England. Duodecimo, engraved title, engraved plate, half-title, single page approbation at rear, a lovely copy in contemporary tan calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco label, bumped. A rare work and a very attractive copy of the most celebrated and influential poem of Delille, in which the author celebrated the virtues of the natural garden or jardin anglais, rather than the fashion for neoclassical symmetry. The work includes a famous cameo appearance by "Poutaveri", that is the Tahitian Autourou, who returned to France with Bougainville. In the poem, Poutaveri glimpses a mulberry tree - the plant most commonly used in the manufacture of tapa cloth - and is overwhelmed with homesickness for Tahiti. The name Poutaveri is interesting as it was actually Autourou's rendering of the name "Bougainville", a name he took in honour of his former captain and Parisian host. Jacques Montanier de Lille (1738-1813) was one of the great eighteenth-century French poets, and his works were much reprinted and translated: his influence on taste in gardening was significant, and he is also known for his translations into French of Virgil's Georgics and Milton's Paradise Lost, two great works with gardening themes. Les Jardins was first published the same year in in a limited and now very rare large format edition by Didot, and this attractive smaller format edition immediately followed. The poem was a great success throughout Europe with English and German translations appearing quickly. . A few early and late pages with some browning at head and foot.

First complete edition, with the addition of better than 1100 lines over the first edition; 4to, pp. [4], iv, xxii, 143, [1], xii; original blue paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfback; manuscript title on spine; very nice copy. First published in octavo in 1782 in Paris, the book enjoyed a long and popular run, and was still in print as late a 1844. In 1801 alone there were three editions one in duodecimo, one in octavo, and this handsome quarto. And, there were many translations of the poem: into Polish (1783); three into Italian (1792, 1794, 1808); into German (1796); into Portuguese (1800); and three into Russian (1804, 1814, 1816). Inspired by Virgil's The Georgics (which he translated) and Nicolas Rapin's The Art of Gardens, this work brought Delille to the height of his notoriety. He praises and poetically describes the English garden, with its immense landscaped parks made up of trees and bodies of water.
