From the Report: " The Select Committee appointed to inquire into the Relations between this Country and the Kafir and Other Tribes on our South African Frontier, and who were empowered to Report the Minutes of Evidence taken before them to the House." Kafir (or Kaffir) was a (non-derogatory) term used by the British in reference to the Xhosa people and the region of south-eastern Africa. This report was completed as the British were fighting the latest in a series of wars with the Xhosa. The British Cape Colony, under Governor and High Commissioner Sir Harry Smith, had pushed its frontier north, annexing territories far beyond the original Dutch and British settlements. This expansion resulted in conflict with the Boers of the Orange Free State, and later the Xhosa nation in the Eastern cape.
