Most of the items in the collection were acquired by the Lambs in the field, and, in addition to the beauty of the individual cloths, the thorough documentation of the pieces is an invaluable contribution to the study of this body of material. Both Venice Lamb and her husband, Professor Alastair Lamb, have been in-volved with the assembling of the collection, but it is primarily Venice Lamb who has had the opportunity to delve most deeply into the research on de-signs and techniques employed by the West Africans in the manufacture of narrow strip cloth. Daughter of a distinguished British designer and typographer, the late Asheley Havinden, Venice Lamb studied painting in the atelier of Fernand Léger in Paris. Later she was trained as an occupational therapist during which study she first became interested in weaving. Knowledge of this craft was put to use when, for some years, she was Head of the Occupational Therapy De-partment of Sungei Bulch Leper Settlement near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. For approximately four years, from 1968 to 1973, while Professor Lamb was Head of the Department of History in the University of Ghana, she lived and travelled widely in West Africa [.].
