Front free endpaper contains a pasted photograph of Janet and William Beveridge and a gift inscription in their hand 'To Will Davis' dated July 6, 1953. William Beveridge (18791963) was a British economist and social reformer who drafted the influential 1942 'Beveridge Report' which laid the foundation for the UK's modern welfare state and NHS. Janet Beveridge (née Philip, 18761959) was a researcher, writer, collaborator and his wife. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original red cloth in very good condition with gilt titles and very attractive gilt embossing to boards and spine. Endpapers and first flyleaves lightly spotted; age toned. Title page and frontispiece featuring an engraving by Albrecht Durer very good. Text block in very good, sound and fresh condition. Beautiful handmade paper throughout.
