Add to basketSecond edition of this articulation of Batty Langley's classically inspired gothic style, printed five years after the first edition and pocket-size for the use of tradesman. The diagrammatic plates illustrate forms of columns, doors, porticos, windows, pediments, and roof supports, and the final plate shows a cross-section of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The work was frequently reprinted in the coming decades, going through a total of 22 editions up to 1808, although Langley's popularizing of his ideas did not meet with universal acclaim. Never one to hold back, Horace Walpole opined that "all that his [Langley's] books achieved, has been to teach carpenters to massacre that venerable species, and to give occasion to those who know nothing of the matter" (p. 50). The Builder's Jewel is also known for its frontispiece, which reflects Langley's connections to freemasonry by incorporating multiple masonic symbols and carrying a date of AL 5741 (1741 in the masonic calendar). ESTC T163786; Harris & Savage 432; Millard 37 (for the 1757 edition). Horace Walpole, Anecdotes of Painting in England; With Some Account of the Principal Artists, Volume III, 1888. Small octavo (145 x 110 mm), pp. 36. Copper-engraved frontispiece and 99 plates. Contemporary speckled calf, green lettering-piece, raised bands, compartments and boards ruled in gilt, board edges tooled in blind, edges sprinkled red. Mid-20th-century library ticket on rear pastedown. Binding worn, showing signs of heat exposure at corners, circular mark on frontispiece verso, Plate 73 worn along top and fore edge where likely formerly loose, occasional browning and marking internally: very good.…

Add to basket4to, [2], vii, [1] + 4pp., of publishers' catalogue at end, engraved title and 64 engraved plates by Thomas Langley after Batty Langley ( (numbered I-LXII, A, B), title lightly browned, occasional spotting or age-toning, endpapers renewed, contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked. First published as 'Ancient Architecture, Restored and Improved' (London: 1742) and re-issued under this title. A pioneering work, simultaneously of the Gothic revival and the Rococo style. Batty Langley (1696-1751) was in no sense a student of genuine medieval style, and instead pursued a wonderfully inventive scheme to fuse the gothic with the classical, creating the five new gothic orders of architecture illustrated in this work. Langley's work has proved immensely influential. Bound in at the rear: An 8 page catalogue of "A Catalogue of Modern Books on Architecture. on sale at Taylor's Architectural Library", c. 1800.
