A very scarce work.In the original French.Illustrated with in-text and full-paged engravings throughout.Half-title is present.Undated, dated from WorldCat.'La Bible Comique' is a brilliant satire of the Bible, a sought after scarce work which pokes fun of the religious text, most particularly of the Old Testament.Illustrated throughout by Edmond Lavrate, a noted lithographer and anticlerical figure. He contributed for 'Le Monde Plaisant', for which Deslinières was an editor.By the satirical writer Auguste Deslinières, writing under the pseudonym Beausapin. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light marks to the boards and spine. Very light rubbing to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages. Repaired tear to the half-title. Very Good Indeed. book.
Jones, 87 ; Grand-Carteret, 588, 642, 653.

An attractive and large original caricature. Undated but circa 1875. Hand coloured / water colour satirising the funeral of a crying man's godson. Most of his eulogy is speaking about how much he has drunk in his life. a large (32cm x 49cm) print, which is mainly clean and tidy. A touch of marking only. There is a small crease to the bottom left corner. There has been a small area of handling to the sheet. The sheet has been pasted onto a heavy backing paper, which has protected it well. Minor edgewear only. This is a rare item, we have been unable to find any other copies of it. Edmond Lavrate (18291888) was a French draftsman and lithographer renowned for his vigourous anticlerical stance, as well as for his innovations in illustrated advertising and satirical sketches. In the latter part of his career, Lavrate committed himself to the creation of comic watercolours, which frequently lampooned military subjects. With the establishment of the French Republic, he redirected his satirical attention toward Napoleon III, a figure persistently targeted by Republican caricaturists following the defeat at Sedan. According to Guillaume Doizy, Lavrate's body of work extended beyond the traditional boundaries of anticlerical and Republican political caricature to encompass what he termed "anticlerical caricature of manners.".
