Modern rebinding, with endpapers refreshed and the torn and chipped engraved title page expertly repaired. A small amount of rubbing to binding and abrasion to title label. Upper front cover has several small discolorations/stains to leather. Internally, there is some expected aging of the paper, but overall it is largely quite bright and supple. Some occasional worming, mostly to outer margins and mostly in the first third of the book. Several pages with a bit of creasing and a few with small closed tears at the outer margins. Otherwise, an extremely handsome copy of a rare and important volume of early Christian intellectual thought on morality and canon law. ~FFF~ Paul Laymann (1574-1635) was an Austrian Jesuit. He was one of the greatest moralists and canonists of his time, and a frequent writer on philosophical, moral, and juridical subjects. The most important of his thirty-three literary productions is the book for sale here, a compendium of moral theology. Until the second quarter of the eighteenth century it was edited repeatedly (latest edition, Mainz, 1723), and was extensively used as a textbook in seminaries.

According to the Catholic encyclopedia, "He was one of the greatest moralists and canonists of his time, and a copious writer on philosophical, moral, and juridical subjects."
