Gottfired Less [1736-1797] was born in Polish Prussia, educated in theology at the Universities of Halle und Jena. He became a professor of theology at the Akademischen Gymnasium Danzig, and then at the University of Göttingen, where he was made Doktor der Theologie in 1766. In 1784, he was named as head of the faculty [Primarius] at Göttingen. A nicely preserved copy of this classic of Lutheran theology, with minor foxing and toning scattered throughout. Three old owner's signatures on the front (blank) free-endpaper (one dated 1792), otherwise no marks in the text. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

Gottfried Less (1736-1797) war ein deutscher lutherischer Theologe. 1762 ging er als außerordentlicher Professor und Universitätsprediger nach Göttingen, wo er 1765 ordentlicher Professor und Direktor des Predigerkollegiums wurde. 1766 wurde er zum Doktor der Theologie promoviert. 1784 wurde er an der Universität Göttingen zum Primarius ernannt und Konsistorialrat. Ab 1791 war er Schlossprediger und Generalsuperintendent der Generaldiözese Hoya-Diepholz in Hannover. 1793 wurde er Generalsuperintendent der Generaldiözese Calenberg. Kurz vor seinem Tod übernahm er in Hannover die Leitung der Hof- und Töchterschule. Less gilt als Vertreter der Aufklärungstheologie.
