September 1847. - Uhlich (1799-1872) vertrat seit seinem Studium der Theologie in Halle, wo die theologische Ausrichtung eher rationalistisch war und der Aufklärung Kants nahestand, selbst einen dezidiert rationalistischen Standpunkt. Seine rationalistische Glaubensauffassung brachte ihn, seit 1824 Pfarrer, in Gegensatz zum theologisch vorherrschenden Pietismus. Im "Magdeburger Bilderstreit" stand Uhlich selbstverständlich an der Seite Wilhelm Franz Sintenis'. Die harten disziplinarischen Maßnahmen gegen Sintenis bewogen Uhlich zur Gründung des "Vereins der Protestantischen Freunde", der sogenannten "Lichtfreunde", die schnell eine große Verbreitung in eigenen Ortsvereinen in der preußischen Provinz Sachsen fanden - sehr zum Ärger der preußischen Obrigkeit in Staat und Kirche, zumal sich die Lichtfreunde liberal und reformerisch äußerten. Der Vorwurf aus der Kirche an Uhlich, ein "eidbrüchiger Theologe" zu sein, bewog Uhlich, in seiner vorliegenden Schrift "Bekenntnisse" von 1845 sein rationalistisches und liberales theologisches Programm klar und zusammenfassend auf den Punkt zu bringen. Trotzdem oder gerade deshalb hat die Gemeinde der Magdeburger Sankt-Katharinen-Kirche die Berufung Uhlichs zum Pfarrer durchgesetzt. Im Vorfeld der 1848er Revolution waren die Predigten Uhlichs außerordentlich beliebt, die Kirche konnte die Schar der Hörer kaum fassen, zum Ärger der Obrigkeit. Während die staatliche Obrigkeit mit Versammlungsverboten der Lichtfreunde in Preußen reagierte, ging das kirchliche Konsistorium wegen seiner ständigen Missachtung der kirchlichen Liturgie gegen Uhlich vor, was letztlich im September 1847 in seine Amtsenthebung mündete. Zahlreiche Gemeindemitglieder verließen die preußische Landeskirche und gründeten die 'Freie Gemeinde Magdeburg', die Anfang 1848 auf ihrem Höhepunkt bereits 8000 Mitglieder zählte. Uhli.
