First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Foreword by Isabel Anderson, author of *The Spell of Japan*. Illustrated by Billie Chapman. Octavo. 145, 10 (ads) pp. Ex-library (?) with a manuscript label and manuscript number on the spine, but no additional markings. Spine toned with shallow loss at the spine base (affecting the publisher's information) and a tiny daub of paint affecting one one word of the title, binding moderately soiled with a few edge nicks, a near very good copy. The text and illustrations are bright and fine. An uncommon book of Japanese tales for young children, adapted by Mae V. LeBert. From the introduction by Boston author, heiress, WWI volunteer, and society figure Isabel Anderson (née Isabel Weld Perkins): "From her tales [children] will know just what Japanese children are thinking about in that most fascinating island kingdom called the Land between Heaven and Earth. . Long after the children who reads these stories grow up, the tales will. give them a special interest in the far-away country of Japan and a kindly feeling toward its people." According to a publisher's ad facing the title page, The Sandman's stories was a series of at least a dozen titles published by L. C. Page & Company. This title is uncommon; *OCLC* locates a dozen copies.
