Auf seinem Hauptinstrument, dem Altsaxophon, stellte er am Ende der 1940er Jahre den einzigen originären Beitrag neben Charlie Parker dar. Mit 21 Jahren war er in New York Mitglied im berühmten Miles Davis/Gil Evans-Nonett, das an den Plattensessions von Birth of the Cool beteiligt war. Diese Aufnahmen (1949-50) sind eine der Ursprünge des Cool Jazz. Die Mitgliedschaft in dieser Band zeichnete ihn aus, weil er als Weißer in diese Band aufgenommen wurde, obwohl es zu dieser Zeit genügend arbeitslose afroamerikanische Altsaxophonisten gab.…

Seine Solo-Improvisationen wurden oftmals als ästhetischer Höhepunkt dieser Kunst bezeichnet. Rolf ist seit über 50 Jahren aktiver Musiker und hat mit unzähligen Größen des Jazz zusammengearbeitet, in jungen Jahren etwa bereits als musical director mit Benny Goodman. Das Free Jazz-Quartett der Kühn-Brüder sorgte in den 60er Jahren für nachhaltigen Eindruck auf dem Newport Jazz Festival und leistete unschätzbare Dienste für die Wahrnehmung des europäischen Jazz in den USA. Nach vielen Jahren an exponierter Stelle im Theaterbereich und zahlreichen Big Band-Projekten machte er jüngst (endlich) wieder als recording artist von sich hören - und dies besser den je. Seinem ersten, auf dem Album "Affairs" dokumentierten Gipfeltreffen mit musikalischen Freunden wie Ornette Coleman, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker oder Albert Mangelsdorff, ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, folgt mit "Inside Out" ein weiteres hochkarätiges Album, welches lyrische Töne und besten Swing auf höchst abwechslungsreiche und spannungsvolle Weise zu verbinden weiß. Sims ensemble includes Lee Konitz, Tommy Flanagan, Red Mitchell, Joe Cohn, and Mike De Pasqua. The Heavenly Jazz Concert series were held at the Church of the Heavenly Rest to benefit the Day School (which adjoins the church). John Haley "Zoot" Sims was a prolific tenor, alto, and soprano saxophonist who recorded over 100 albums from the 1950s until his death in 1985. Among the musicians Sims recorded with include Pepper Adams, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Al Cohen, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Quincy Jones, Gerry Mulligan, and Sarah Vaughan, among others. 8 x 13.5 inches.
