Some wear to covers and spine, mainly edges and corners, corners bumped and worn, boards starting to show, top and bottom of spine bumped and worn, surface of covers and spine faded and worn, internally in good condition, pages crisp and clear but slightly yellowing, edges lightly creased throughout.

In quite good quarter black cloth and light brown cloth with central black field with seated woman and child to front. The boards have collapsed hollow and are a little loose; shelf-cocked; slightly marked; corners and spine ends bumped and frayed. Lightly foxed free end papers; name, address and date in ink on front free end paper. Very tanned cut edges; the fore and top edges are deckled. The text block is quite firm and straight, with small marks throughout. Good condition. Title-page in red and black with John Leech image called 'The Mother of the Gracchi. In the text, steel engravings, in colour and b/w; and other smaller b/w illustrations by John Leech. All the illustrations have titles and listed in Contents pages. Without jacket.

Front hinge slightly loose, webbing exposed, no loose pages, previous owners name to free front end paper. Text clean and bright with little wear. Fully illustrated.
