This book exposes pervasive flaws in the British Lunacy system of the mid-19th century, shedding light on the many ways that it could be easily abused by individuals wishing to commit someone to an asylum for personal gain. The author was inspired to write this book after witnessing the unjust commitment of a loved one and witnessing firsthand the harrowing conditions many patients were subjected to. Filled with sample cases and appeals to the reader's sense of justice, this book indicts not only the system itself but also medical professionals who signed off on fraudulent commitments and asylum administrators who turned a blind eye to inhumane treatment. It argues for major reform of the system to prevent vulnerable people from being unjustly committed and abused. This book is an important historical document that is still relevant today and will appeal to anyone interested in the history of mental health care, as well as those concerned with civil liberties. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

C1849 John Leech 1817 -1864 was a British caricaturist and illustrator. He was best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Leech catered to contemporary prejudices, such as anti-Americanism and antisemitism and supported acceptable social reforms. Leech's critical yet humorous cartoons on the Crimean War helped shape public attitudes toward heroism, warfare, and Britons' role in the world. Leech also enjoys fame as the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. He was furthermore a pioneer in comics, creating the recurring character Mr. Briggs and some sequential illustrated gags.[ Size is 90mm x 35mm. Condition is good. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. DOLBY, Edwin Thomas. (1824-1902) Autograph Letter Signed to Punch illustrator, John Leech, about illustrating for the periodical 'Once a Week'. Camden Square, N.W., 28 December 1859. Two pages, signed, folded as sent. Very good condition, light handling marks only. A professional letter from the travel and topographical artist Edwin Thomas Dolby to John Leech, written during the first year of publication of Once a Week. Dolby states that Messrs. Colnaghi of Pall Mall have introduced him to Mr. Bradbury 'with a view to my assisting in the illustrations of Once a Week,' and seeks Leech's consideration. He outlines his credentials, noting that he accompanied the 'Russian expedition in 1854, which I fully illustrated,' and that he possesses sketches and memoranda from Sweden, Denmark, North Germany, the Baltic, and elsewhere on the Continent. He offers references from 'all the principal artists and publishers of the day.' Dolby's reference to the Russian expedition relates to his large folio publication Dolby's Sketches in the Baltic (London: M. & N. Hanhart for P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., 1854), issued during the Baltic operations of the Crimean War. That work, published under Colnaghi's auspices, established him as a draughtsman of war and travel subjects. The present letter shows him leveraging those published credentials in seeking illustration work for the newly founded weekly. Once a Week was established in July 1859 by Bradbury & Evans following their separation from Charles Dickens, and Leech was among its principal illustrators from the outset. Dated December 1859, this letter belongs to the immediate formation period of the journal, when contributors were being assembled for the new illustrated paper. Signed by Author(s).
