Winkler: Die Frühzeit der deutschen Lithographie, München 1975, S. 121) und in der Tat wären die Arbeiten Kirchhoffs von denen Reuters, der alles monogrammierte, was er druckte, nur schwer zu unterscheiden, trügen sie nicht zumeist seine Initialen oder seinen Namenszug zusätzlich. Um 1823 scheint Kirchhoff dann eine eigene lithographische Anstalt betrieben zu haben, da seine Blätter seit dieser Zeit nicht mehr Reuters Initialen tragen.

Nach abgelegter Prüfung wurde er von J. G. von Schadow (1764 - 1850) in die Lehrklasse der Akademie aufgenommen. Nach Beendigung des Studiums widmete er sich hauptsächlich der Porträtmalerei, wozu er von seinem späteren Schwiegervater Wilh. Reuter (1768 - 1834) angeregt worden war.
