Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. With descriptive letter-press by Leitch Ritchie and a Biographical Sketch by Alaric A. Watts. Hardcover, bound in black cloth with gold lettering on the spine. lvi + 336 pages + unnumbered plates and tissue guards. Pages edges gilt. Very good condition, inside and out. This copy is larger than others we've seen, measuring 7.5 x 10.75 inches, giving it very wide margins. Gift inscription from Christmas 1853 on a blank page at the front. A very nice copy. ** Price drastically lowered at the start of 2025, as this book has been with me longer than my youngest daughter, and I'd very much like to see it move to a new home (the book, not my daughter). **.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Volume I was published in 1837, volume II in 1837. Both books are very good in original decorative velvet binding. Blue paper with gilt lettering label panels on spines. A separate decorative label identifying Vol. I, but the one for Vol. II is missing. All external page edges are gilt. Most of the velvet is rubbed off of spines and the board panels are discolored and stained but the decorativeness is still discernible. Vol II has a 3/4" by 1/4" loss of cloth on the front corner at tail of board spine and a 3/8" by 1/8" rub in the lower left corner of front panel. Both volumes have small closed tears along the edges or corners of board spine but with minimal fraying. All fore-edge corners tips are rubbed through but also with minimal fraying. Board edges are scuffed but with only one small (1/4") rub-through on the fore-edge of the front panel of Vol I. Occasional, but very minimal internal foxing to either volume. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste-downs of both. The engravings on the frontispieces and title pages of both books are listed in the List of Engravings as being at the text pages where they are described. VOLUME I: has 20 engravings including the frontispiece (which is listed as being on page 77 in the List of Engravings) and the title page which includes the engraving of Sackville Street, Dublin which is listed as being on page 10, altho the List fails to specify it as "Title Page." One tissue guard is missing. VOLUME II: has damp-staining from the FFEP - pp. iv. Gutter is cracked between the frontispiece and the title page and the tissue guard between them is missing; an additional gutter crack is at page 256 and the facing engraving. There are 19 engravings including the frontispiece (Lady at Prayers) which is listed as being at page 199 where it is described, and the title page (Lower Loch Erne) listed as page 166. Other than the above specifics both volumes are internally clean. Text blocks are snug in spine of gutter cracks. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Additional photos available at your request. International sales to all countries other than the UK will require use of an alternative shipping company which will result in higher shipping expense. A signature upon receipt may also be required.

A G Vickers (illustrator). Very good copy of this journal of a trip to Russia by Ritchie in 1835(?) published as Heaths Picturesque Annual for 1836, red decorated boards and gilt lettering to spine and gilt page edges, light rubbing to extremes but overall a nice tight copy, I can only find 24 engravings from 25 listed so it appears that the 'Tower of Nikolskoi Church (vignette) is missing, also the illustration of 'the Interior of Karzan Church' (page 100) is loose. Inscription in very hard to read writing on front end paper, dated 1835, see picture. Otherwise a very good copy. JH.
