Elephant folio [LARGE separate series] This copper/stipple engraving of this scene from Othello all original and dated 1799. Desdemona sleeping "deshabille" with Othello the Moor dagger in hand looking pained and confused. No marks or stains, large borders doesn't look to have ever been framed, two closed splits at right edge one comes into the plate line on very small. Print not affected and no loss. Good deep plate mark. Measures 19 x 14 inches (plate size) and 26 x 20.5 inches edge to edge. 65 x 50 cm. (Larger than the ones in the 9 folio volumes which comprise the set and also larger than the one in the British Museum and theirs was donated by John Boydell himself). Dated as Published with the plate line, September 29th 1799. None for sale online at time of listing. *NOTE: The "magnificent and accurate" Shakespeare edition which Boydell began in 1786 was to be the focus of his enterprise?he viewed the print folio and the gallery as offshoots of the main project of the folio works issued in 9 volumes. Boydell spared no expense. He hired the typography experts William Bulmer and William Martin a foundry to cast the types; and even a manufactory to make the ink. Boydell also chose to use high-quality wove Whatman paper. The illustrations were printed independently and could be inserted and removed as the purchaser desired. The first volumes of the Dramatic Works were published in 1791 and the last in 1805.

The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' (the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible, mythology or the classics) in contemporary British art, a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages. What better unifying theme for such a project than the works of Shakespeare, which had become so popular and so integral to British identity by the mid-18th century? The Gallery opened in May 1789 with 34 canvases by 18 British artists. By the next year there were 55 paintings and in 1796 the total was 84, along with dozens of 'Small Pictures'. Once the exhibition was mounted, reproductive engravings of the paintings produced by an in-house team of 46 printmakers were available to purchase, either as a large portfolio of 90 prints or as a luxurious illustrated edition of the plays.
