First edition; folio (38.5 x 16 cm); 111p., 55 partly coloured lithographed plates, some double page, large geological coloured map; contemporary quarter red morocco over marbled boards, label and gilt tooling to spine, a fine copy. A rare and interesting work on the spa towns of the Caucasus. The plates show plans for fountains, bathing houses and pumping stations of in Piatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk, Yessentuki and Kislovodsk, all of which were popular destinations for 19th century Russians to visit. Aristocracy, musicians and artists were drawn to these four towns due to the famous healing powers of the mineral waters.

Victor-Edmond-Léon Dru (1837-1904) était un ingénieur et entrepreneur à l'origine de nombreux puits artésiens à Paris (comme à La Butte-aux-Cailles), mais aussi en Russie et en Algérie. A fine period binding. A few minor spots, mostly on the endpapers; a handsome copy. * The DonVolga Canal was a long-standing tsarist development project, but only materialised during the Soviet era. Though planned as early as 1887 based on the present document, the works did not begin until 1938 and were not completed until 1952. Needless to say, many German prisoners of war and Gulag detainees were involved in its construction. Elegantly named the Lenin VolgaDon Navigation Canal, it links the two rivers at their nearest point. Victor-Edmond-Léon Dru (18371904) was an engineer and entrepreneur responsible for many artesian wells in Paris (such as at La Butte-aux-Cailles), as well as in Russia and Algeria.
