Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Specially bound in three-quarters red morocco and red cloth. No indication of binder. Inscribed in ink: "June 10/ 22 To Mrs. Calvin Thomas from Leonard van Noppen." Tipped in inside the rear cover is an eight-line ALS signed by Leonard van Noppen written in the imagery of a drama, probably an indication that the recipient of the book was the wife of the actor Calvin Thomas. Also tipped in on the last blank is a card thanking the recipient for the expression of sympathy and signed by van Noppen's wife, Adah van Noppen. In another notation, someone called E. A. J. is referred to. Van Noppen was a poet, professor at Columbia University, and American Naval Attache at the Hague. His translation of Vondel's "Lucifer" was celebrated as a major event. "The Challenge" was praised by Thomas Hardy. Second Edition. Very Good. No Dust Jacket.
