Full-Leather (Hardcover). Condition: Very Good. Full-Leather (Hardcover) the back has been professionally restored, 35 x 23 cm, [14], 803, [68] pp., Latin, book condition: Very Good In 1609, the second edition of the influential work "De iustitia et iure caeterisque virtutibus cardinalibus" (On Justice and Law and the Other Cardinal Virtues) by the Flemish Jesuit Leonardus Lessius (15541623) was published. Here are the key details regarding this specific edition and the work: Publication: The 1609 edition was printed by the renowned Officina Plantiniana (Jan Moretus) in Antwerp. It is the Editio Secunda (second edition) of the work originally released in 1605. Content: The book is a theological and legal treatise based on the Secunda Secundae of Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae (questions 47 to 171). It focuses on the application of justice and moral law. Economic Innovation: Starting with this 1609 edition, an important appendix regarding the Monti di Pietà (montes pietatis or Mountains of Piety) was added. This was crucial for the ethical justification of modern banking practices, specifically regarding interest and lending. Historical Significance: Lessius is highly regarded in this work for his sophisticated understanding of economics. He applied moral principles to complex 17th-century commercial practices, such as insurance, exchange rates, and market pricing. Although the first edition was published in Leuven in 1605 by Jan Masius, the 1609 version from the Plantin press was the first to be thoroughly revised and expanded by the author himself for the international market. (16), 210, (4) SS. "Even now not without interest" (Cath. Enc. IX). Buchbestände in Dtl.). - I: De Backer/Sommervogel IV, 1737, 13. Krivatsy 6913. Parkinson/L. 1453. Vgl. Hirsch/H. Two works bound in 1 volume. 12mo. 258, [6 blank]; [xxiv], 522, [16] pp. Title vignettes; minor worming at rear margins, light waterstaining. Original vellum; a few small worm-holes at spine edges/gutter, edges discolored. Early ownership signatures [ex libris Christophori Redii [?]; . . . 1657], single College of the Sacred Heart rubberstamp on ffep. Very good. Rare. "Four years [after the publication of De justitia et jure] a work of quite a different nature was written by Lessius under the title, "Quae fides et religio sit capessenda" (Antwerp, 1609). It is a short book of some 150 pages, on controversy and apologetics, which brought about a great many conversions, among them that of John of Nassau. The book was often reprinted and was translated into Flemish, German, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, and French." â" The Catholic Encyclopedia. / The second work is written by Alvarez de Paz and edited by Father Gonsalvo Barnuevo. Alvarez de Paz was a Spanish Jesuit mystic and member of the Society of Jesus who preached in Peru. Alleged to have had the gift of prophecy, during his sermons he often fell into ecstasy and had to be carried from the pulpit. Supposedly, when he died in Potosi, 100,000 silver miners left their work to observe his funeral services.
