Providing a unique glimpse into Soviet Russia shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution, the author provides a rich narrative of the political, social, and military conditions as seen through the eyes of the ruling party. By recounting his firsthand experiences and interactions with key figures, the author offers invaluable insights into the complex challenges faced by the newly established Soviet government and the profound changes it brought to Russian society. The book offers a balanced and nuanced perspective on a pivotal moment in Russian history, exploring the early efforts of the Soviet Republic to establish peace, reconstruct its economy, and implement far-reaching social reforms, all while facing internal and external pressures. The author's account serves as a valuable resource for understanding the origins and complexities of the Soviet Union and its lasting impact on the 20th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Wraps. Presumed first edition/first printing. 153, [5] p. Table at page 44. From Wikipedia: "Cecil John L'Estrange Malone (7 September 1890 8 June 1965) was Britain's first communist member of the House of Commons. He played a pioneering role in aviation and rose to become a Lieutenant-Colonel. He saw action in the First World War, commanding HMS Ben-my-Chree, for which he was awarded the Order of the Nile. With a passport endorsed by the British Foreign Office Malone arrived at the Soviet border on Sunday, 28 September 1919. Malone met and spoke with key leaders. In Moscow, Malone met with Litvinov, then a top official in the Commissariat of Foreign Affairs. He later met with foreign minister Chicherin. Malone's new friends arranged for him to accompany Red Army leader Leon Trotsky on an inspection of troops at Tula aboard Trotsky's special train. During his visit, detailed in his memoir, Malone toured factories and theatres, power stations and government offices. He found the Bolshevik government to be compelling and emerged a communist. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling, with some fraying at top and bottom of spine. Pencil erasure residue on fep.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VG. First edition. 189pp, with many illustrations in the text, plus the colour frontis. With the author's signed gift inscription to the front free endpaper. Contents clean and fresh. Both front and back endpapers have small corner stains from former sellotape which had been used to secure a plastic cover. The upside of this is that it has protected the blue cloth binding: the thin boards are slightly faded and faintly marked, and the corners have been knocked, and the spine blue has faded, and the spine ends are crimped. A very good copy. [nb See also our signed copy of Nipping Bear, by the same author].
