2 parts in 1 volume. Stoopendaal's lovely 98 views of the Vecht region, the favourite area for wealthy people from Amsterdam and Utrecht to build their country houses. "This illustrated work is an important source for the spectacular development of country life along the Vecht during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries" (The Anglo-Dutch Garden). The engravings are numbered in the lower right corner and have a few lines of engraved explanatory text in Dutch on the left and in French on the right underneath. The explanations in the preface are provided by Andries de Leth. The poem "Journey along the Vecht" by Claas Bruin, describing the illustrated houses, is present as usual. Some occasional spots, some waterstains in the upper margins, not touching the plates, one leaf with a corner torn-off and some water damage to the text leaves; a good copy. A view of the Schapenplien (Muntplien) with the Munttoren (The Mint Tower), the Englese Huizen (English Houses), and the Doelensluis. The Muntplein is named after the Munttoren (or simply Munt) tower which stands on this square. This tower was once part of the three main medieval city gates. In the seventeenth century, it temporarily served as a mint, hence the name. The square was originally named Schapenplein and in the seventeenth century was enclosed by the Englese Huizen, shown in the centre. The buildings were constructed in 1624, and would be demolished in the late nineteenth century for the widening of the bridge over the Singel, as a result of which the enclosed Schapenplein disappeared. The new square was given the name Sophiaplein, after the deceased first wife of King William III, but was soon called the Muntplein or in short, the Munt. Based in part on de Fer's also extremely rare 1713 wall map, this is the third issue, with the inset city plans replacing a vignette of Niagara Falls and the publisher's imprint below the title. Hendrick de Leth began his cartographic career working for the foremost family printing company in 17th and 18th-century Amsterdam, the Visscher firm. The family of Visscher was one of the most distinguished of all 17th-century cartographic firms, and a major player in the era now considered the golden age of Dutch mapmaking. In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam became an international center of the arts and of cartography, with engravers and printers produced magnificent maps and charts of every kind. The fields of artistic production and mapmaking were arguably more seamlessly united during this era than any period before or since, as the strong competition among publishers meant that maps not only had to be scrupulously accurate, but also visually appealing. In this milieu, a number of venerable firms, including those established by Blaeu, Jansson, Hondius, as well as Visscher, competed for the ever-expanding market for maps and atlases. The firm founded by Nicholas Visscher set standards for exceptional quality that few others were able to equal, and Hendrick de Leth, who eventually rose to assume control of the Visscher publishing house in the 18th century, maintained the company's standards for excellence during a period when Amsterdam's cartographic preeminence was just beginning to be challenged by the French school of scientific cartography. Boasting advanced geographical information, fine engraving and coloring, and striking decoration, this map is one of de Leth's foremost works, and a fundamental example the best in 18th-century Dutch cartography. Encompassing much of the world, including all of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, it includes a wealth of geographical, historical, practical and anecdotal information, including commercial sea routes and the paths of famous explorers like Magellan, as well as inset plans of important port cities including Veracruz, Rio de Janeiro, and Havana. One cartouche at lower center is surmounted by a plan of Mexico City, while another, at lower right, shows an atmospheric view of the dramatic coast of the Cape of Good Hope. From the Weessluis, named after the nearby Burgerweeshuis (Civic Orphanage), we look northwards along the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. In the distance, the monumental western rear façade of Amsterdam's Town Hall dominates the view (since 1808 the Royal Palace). The quays, canal and bridge in the foreground teem with merchants, pedestrians, boatmen, small boats, cargo vessels, horses and carriages. The print therefore presents not only a monumental city view, but also an exceptionally lively picture of everyday traffic and commerce in early eighteenth-century Amsterdam. Along the water on the left is the flower market, which in the eighteenth century was Amsterdam's principal market for flowers, plants and trees. Merchants from the surrounding region brought their goods into the city by boat and offered them for sale along the quay. As early as the seventeenth century, florists and growers from places including Haarlem and Noordwijk came to sell their wares at this market. In 1862, the flower market moved to the Singel, between the Munt and Koningsplein. On the opposite side was the Pijpenmarkt, or Pipe Market, where earthenware tobacco pipes (mainly from Gouda) were brought ashore, unloaded and traded. This was also the landing place for the ferry service to Gouda. Opposite the Pijpenmarkt, near the Weessluis, was the Boommarkt, where the ferry services to Lisse and Noordwijk called. This part of the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was therefore not only an important market district but also a busy hub for passenger and goods transport. Behind the Town Hall rises the base of the never-completed tower of the Nieuwe Kerk. Plans to provide the church with a monumental tower had been abandoned during the seventeenth century; in 1783, most of the remaining tower structure was demolished.
