Die einfacheren Methoden sind in meinem ,Leitfaden der klinischen Untersuchungsmethoden? behandelt, der eine Ergänzung zum vorliegenden Werk bildet, so wie die nachstehenden Zeilen jenesandere Buch ergänzen. Beide Werke zusammen bilden eine vollständige Darstellung dessen, was ein Krankenbehandler von den Methoden der Erkennung menschlicher Krankheiten wissen muß. Hat ein solches Buch Daseinsberechtigung? lch glaube, ja. Ein Arzt kann nur im Fall grober Mißgriffe belangt werden, und auch dann kann ihm niemand verwehren, sich auf eine angebliche, wenn auch in Wirklichkeit nicht vorhandene Künstlerschaft zuberufen; denn für einen Arzt gilt kraft der Prüfung, die seiner Approbation vorausging, die Fiktion, daß er alles Erforderliche gelernt hat und daß eineFahrlässigkeit bei ihm also nicht auf einem Mangel der notwendigen Kenntnisse beruhen kann. Wer das Gegenteil behauptet, muß beweisen, daß die Fiktion falsch ist. Beim Nichtarzt ist die Sache umgekehrt. Im Notfall muß er beweisen, daß er die erforderlichen Kenntnisse hat oder zu einer bestimmtenkritischen Zeit gehabt hat. Gelingt ihm dieser Beweis nicht, dann wird bei ihm die Unwissenheit so unterstellt, wie beim Arzt das Wissen. Mag also ein Krankenbehandler von der Diagnostik auf exakter Grundlage gar nichts halten: wenn er vor Gericht steht, gilt nichts anderes als nur sie. Man darf nicht vergessen, daß alle Sondermethoden der Krankheitserkennung,mögen sie auch zeitweilig noch so volkstümlich sein, einen sehr beschränkten Kreis von Verfechtern haben, und daß das hartnäckige Sichversteifen auf Außenseitermethoden die Kurierfreiheit gefährdet. Man braucht nur an die gemeingefährlichen Krankheiten zu denken, bei denen von sorgfältiger Erkennung und Isolierung alles abhängt, wenn nicht tausende von Menschen, vielleicht ganze Länder dem sicheren Tod preisgegeben werden sollen. Andieser Verantwortung ist jeder beteiligt, der sich berufsmäßig mit der Behandlung von Kranken befaßt. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt war schon der oben erwähnte Leitfaden geschrieben, und das vorliegende Werk wird in noch höherem Maße von diesem Gedanken getragen. Daraus ergibt sich die Stoffbegrenzung. Es ist nicht schwierig, das alte Schema der klinischen Diagnostik mit anderen Worten zum 1000 und einsten Mal zu bringen. Für ein derartiges Buch bestände weder ein praktisches noch ein wissenschaftlichesBedürfnis. Dagegen fehlt ein Werk, das, über das Elementarste der Krankenuntersuchung hinausgehend, die etwas schwierigeren Methoden in einer Form bringt, die für jeden Leser auch tatsächlich verständlich ist. Dazugehört in erster Linie ein reichhaltiges Bildermaterial. Die überwiegende Mehrzahl der hier gebrachten Bilder sind eigens für die Zwecke dieses Buches hergestellt. Dies war eine zeitraubende und schwierige Arbeit, aber immerhin als rein technische Sache der leichtere Teil der Aufgabe. Weit schwieriger war die Textgestaltung. Jahrzehntelange .
