Tragediia svobody is the principal philosophical work of Sergei Aleksandrovich Levitskii, a student of Nikolai Losskii and one of the lesser-known but important émigré thinkers of the postwar generation. Written in exile and published in Frankfurt by Posev?a major intellectual outpost of Russian émigré anti-Soviet thought?this book constitutes a rigorous metaphysical inquiry into the problem of free will and moral agency. In the preface, Losskii praises Levitskii as a spiritual heir to the Russian religious-philosophical tradition initiated by Vladimir Solov?ev, thereby placing the work in a lineage that includes thinkers like Berdiaev and Florenskii. First issue of this set of two brochures about the history and present political situation of Ukraine following the Civil War and ensuing turmoil of the interwar period. V. M. Levitskii (1886?1946) was a lawyer, journalist, and political analyst who was a leading figure of the Constitutional Democratic Party in Kyiv and the "liberal conservative" group around Vasily Shul'gin and Petr Struve. He served in the White forces during the Russian Civil War and was also head of General Wrangel's Army Information Department. His extensive memoirs about his travels throughout Russia and Ukraine during the Civil War, including cities such as Khyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Sevastopol, which Shul'gin called a "notebook of a tourist of the Revolution", were only recently published in full (Bor'ba na iuge, 2019). Among the topics covered here are the supposed "invention" of the Ukrainian people by Count Stanis?aw Potocki, the "Ukrainian movement" in the 19th century, Mikhail Grushevskii and his nationalist leadership in Galicia, the Austro-German occupation, the Hetmanate of Pavlo Skoropadsky, the supposed influence of the Stone Masons, and many other aspects. Overall, the author appears to view the Ukrainian nationalist movement with little less contempt than the Russian Bolshevik rulers. As of November 2023, KVK, OCLC show seven holdings, not all of them complete.
