FIRST EDITION 1975, SPECIALLY BOUND EDITION OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY LOWRY, THIS COPY OUT OF SERIES AND NOT NUMBERED, (FOR PRESENTATION TO MERVYN LEVY), SOLD WITH AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF LOWRY and MERVYN LEVY. 4to, 280 x 240 mm, 11 x 9½ inches, 31 pages of text plus 31 colour and 99 black and white plates, bound in the publisher's full dark blue morocco, lettered gilt on spine with 2 gilt rules at head and tail, dark blue endpapers, all edges gilt, silk marker. A touch of rubbing to head and tail of spine, no previous owner inscriptions. A very good copy. Laid in is a large photograph of an elderly Lowry in conversation with the artist Mervyn Levy. Mervyn Levy (19141996) was a Welsh artist, art teacher and writer on art. Born in Swansea, where he became a friend of the painter Alfred Janes, the poet Dylan Thomas and the musician Daniel Jones, he spent most of his teaching career in Bristol and London, and made several popular television series about painting techniques. Loosely inserted are two photographs of Lowry at his easel; one is stamped on the verso by the Daily Telegraph Library and is dated 17 February 1964. Lowry mostly painted the urban industrial districts of north-west England, often peopled with stylized figures known as "the matchstick men". This book features many such scenes, as well as characteristically sombre portraits, still-lifes and rural scenes. Quarto. Illustrations throughout, occasionally in colour. Original blue morocco, spine lettered in gilt, blue endpapers, edges gilt, blue silk bookmarker. Covers a little bowed, small bump to spine, couple of marks to covers and front endpapers. A very good copy.

A friend of Lowry's, Solomon worked as a sculptor, a painter, and the principal of Rochdale College of art. He also created a bust of Lowry in bronze, which was displayed at the Royal Academy in 1967. Levy was another great friend of Lowry's, as well as an art critic and a teacher. A year after this book was published, he produced another work, The Drawings of L.S. Lowry: Public and Private, which further explored the artist's oeuvre. Lowry is well known for painting the urban industrial districts of north-west England, often peopled with stylized figures known as "the matchstick men". This book features many such scenes, as well as characteristically sombre portraits, still-lifes, and rural scenes. It is rare for any book to be signed by not one, not two, but three people who were instrumental in it's creation. Quarto. Black and white and colour illustrations throughout.
