Octavo, ix, 528pp. Yellow cloth, title in blue on spine. Blue topstain, lightly sunned and foxed. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Solid text block, small points of wear to spine and front endpaper, otherwise fine. In the publisher's dust jacket, $6.95 retail price on front flap, faint shelf wear. (Penzler 262-263) A vibrant example. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Santa Barbara / Feb. 1 /67 / For Harris, with profound thanks for his brilliant and powerful representation. Ken." A nice association copy between Ross Macdonald and his longtime lawyer and friend. Kenneth Millar, signed "Ken" in this copy, used numerous pseudonyms over his career, including John Macdonald, John Ross Macdonald, and Ross Macdonald. These pen names, made up of popular Millar family names, were used to help avoid confusion between Kenneth and his wife, Margaret, who was also a mystery fiction author. Signed.
