Faltspur. - Das Gebiet, das die "Neurologie" heute umfaßt, und das der Neurologe heute vertritt, ist zusammengesetzt aus zwei im Grunde ganz verschiedenen Teilen. Diese beiden Teile sind die Neurosen auf der einen Seite, die organischen Ne…rvenkrankheiten auf der anderen. Die organischen Nervenkrankheiten sind durch schwere, anatomisch faßbare Veränderungen charakterisiert; die Neurosen, zu denen wir in diesem Zusammenhang natürlich die Chorea, die Paralysis agitans usw. nicht mehr zu rechnen haben, vielmehr nur Neurasthenie und Hysterie und einige verwandte Zustände, z.B. Zwangsvorstellungen, sind in der vollen Bedeutung des Wortes Geisteskrankheiten, wenn auch die leichtesten Geisteskrankheiten. Daß die eine dieser Neurosen, die Hysterie, so besonders gern Symptome imitiert, die anscheinend auch bei organischen Erkrankungen vorkommen, bringt sie nicht in die Nähe der organischen Nervenkrankheiten. Ein Esel, der sich ein Löwenfell umhängt, wird darum noch nicht einmal eine Katze. Es ist in der Tat der Nachweis, daß sich die anscheinend manchmal so schweren "organischen" Symptome, die die Neurosen und besonders die Hysterie hervorbringen, die Lähmungen, Kontrakturen usw., durchaus von den wirklichen Symptomen der organischen Nervenkrankheiten, den Läh-mungen und Kontrakturen der organischen Hemiplegie, unterscheiden, nicht nur theoretisch, sondern auch für die praktische Therapie wohl die wesentlichste Errungenschaft, die die Neurologie in den letzten 20 Jahren zu verzeichnen hat.
