(Delivered July 16, 1961), and "Why Fight the Civil War Again? - Civil War's Unfinished Business: Complete Emancipation" (Delivered July 2, 1961) by the Rev. Lewis A. [Allen] McGee at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles… and published in mimeographed print form as the September 1961 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. The first Sermon ("Where Are We Going?"), a stapled pamphlet, measures 7" by 8-1/2" and contains 12 pages including front and rear covers. The second Sermon ("Why Fight the Civil War Again?") is laid in, as issued, measuring 8-1/2" by 14" and containing three-and-one-half pages of text. Also laid in is a half-page slip from the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman which reads, "LEWIS AND MARCELLA McGEE leave for Chico, California, September 1, 1961, with the affectionate good wishes of the staff and congregation which have enjoyed three and a half years friendship and ministry from two of what old-timers in orthodox churches would call 'the Lord's anointed' and we call 'cherished exemplars of the good life' - These two Sermons of the Month by Mr. McGee 'Why Fight the Civil War Again?' and 'Where Are We Going?' offer friends near and far a sampling of the mind and heart of our Associate Minister shared with us these past forty-two months." Previously, but lightly, folded. The REV. LEWIS A. [ALLEN] McGEE (1893-1979) was one of the first African-American ministers of the Unitarian Church. Active in the Civil Rights Movement, he was the Associate Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles from 1958 to 1961 before becoming the Minister of the Chico Unitarian Fellowship in 1961.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. NEW UNREAD FIRST PRINTING. 'The book of the year' SUNDAY TIMES'One of the very best biographies I have ever read' STEPHEN FRY' - A hot thunderstorm of a book' DAVID HARE - 'Erotic Vagrancy gave me a week of pure joy' CRAIG BROWN - 'Unputdownable' TONY PALMER…- 'A genius writer' LYNN BARBER - 'ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE . . . ONE OF THE GREAT READING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE' MARINA HYDEA. Thirteen years in the writing, Erotic Vagrancy doesn't only surpass every other biography of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton yet to appear, this rich, vital and passionately articulated book, which is as extravagant and wayward as its two subjects, is also about celebrity, creativity, being flawed, being brilliant, sexuality, the intermingling of a low and a highbrow existence, pride, insecurity, attraction and repulsion, and devilry. We see Taylor the child actress exchanging dogs and horses for husbands. We see Burton emerging from the mists and brimstone of Wales to be the greatest theatrical animal of his generation. The pair come together in Rome during the making of Cleopatra, which gives Lewis the opportunity for a major farcical set-piece. We then enter a world of jewels and private jets, vodka, yachts and furs - the splendid vulgarity of the Sixties, where the narrative of Taylor and Burton becomes a Pop Art story. Then, inevitably, it all goes wrong, with alcoholism, violence, recrimination and divorce ( twice ) - with Burton, whom Lewis depicts as a Faustus figure, damned by fame, dead at fifty-eight.Stephen Fry has said, 'It is one of the very best biographies I have ever read. One of the best books about fame, desire, Hollywood and mid-to-late twentieth century culture ever written. Inside which, brilliant, hilarious and sensitive insights on all manner of subjects fizz and froth. Magnificent, terrible, tragic, triumphant.'.
