The first edition of an entertaining essay about books: not the reading, writing, or collecting of them but how useful a big book was to the author in allowing him to build up a sloping desk for himself in the British Museum where all around were condemned to work on flat table tops.

TOGETHER with a handwritten card from the author to 'Roger' dated 24th December 2013, a Christmas Card printed by Evergreen Press featuring Burnett's poem 'St David's, August 1648', and a handwritten note on a compliments slip dated 'Christmas, 2015' from Burnett to 'Roger'. A book and ephemera in Fine condition, apart from an ink smudge on the rear free endpaper which may have occurred at the time of printing.

Samuel Butler's digressive and eccentric essay recounting his visits to the British Museum and its lack of sloping desks â" upon which he needs in order to write â" and his subsequent use of a book as the required support.

A presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank page 'With all best wishes | John White | 2-12-15'. Quarter oatmeal cloth over red paper-covered boards, paper label to spine, red endpapers. An intriguing edition, with Sagar's illuminating introduction preceding the third version of the Foreword, published here for the first time, in which Lawrence reflects upon the government's seizure of his original typescript on the grounds of obscenity: 'There is nothing in the obscene words to be afraid of. they are like any other words, and all our fear hysteria was merely poor crude savage taboo-terror, nothing in it.'; continuing with a critique of Bolshevism and concluding, 'The mass, unopposed would certainly destroy mankind. It is for the minority to fight for existence of the sane, free, whole individual.'.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Solander box with cover and spine labels containing 26 colored card sheets upon which are mounted 55 pieces of ephemera, 4to., with index sheet. Samples of ephemeral printing taken from commercial runs mainly done to deadlines. One of 75 copies. Many different typefaces on a wide variety of papers. The solander box was made by Smith Settle of Otley. A very attractive collection. A near fine set with minor wear to the covers of the box. Scarce on the market.

Number 102 of 170 (220) copies printed in black (the illustrations in grey) on Amatruda paper. 7 illustrations and cover design by Richard Shirley Smith. ONE OF 200 COPIES, this marked 'Out of Series' and 'Printer's copy', tipped-in photographic frontispiece portrait, small hand-coloured tailpiece, pp. [74], crown 8vo, original quarter natural linen with salmon pink boards, faint foxing to top edge with tail edge untrimmed, a couple of light marks, spare label tipped in at rear, very good. A posthumous collection of verse, in memory of an author whose day-job was as Director at the publisher John Murray.

One of an edition limited to 385 copies, of which 325 were for sale. Printed on Velin Arches rag paper with Joanna Type, save for letters K, R, T, V & Z which were printed offset litho. Each letter is illustrated by a full-page drawing and decorative initial, and all fifty-eight illustrations were water-coloured by hand by the hand-colourists of Libanus Press. Cloth covered spine over pink paper covered boards, gilt lettering to the spine and upper board, decorated endpapers, TOGETHER WITH a copy of the prospectus loosely laid in. Tall Octavo, 250 x 165 mm, pp. [64]. A book in Fine condition. All of the artists involved in this book donated their work, and the entire proceeds of sale were donated to the London Lighthouse.

A free rendering into heroic verse by Dryden of the story found in Boccaccio's 'Decameron', which was first published in 1700 as a section from John Dryden's 'Fables Ancient and Modern'.
