Hardback. Condition: New. This is a survey of the religious attitudes reflected in Latin literature from the late Republic to the time of Constantine. Its main theme is the development of the Roman public religion in that period. Within this theme the most pervasive issue is the relationship between Roman religion and morality.…Though the link between the two is shown to be closer than is often supposed, it was also the case that the rise of such systems as Stoicism and Christianity contributed to a sense of morality more detached from traditional conceptions of the collective well-being of the Roman state. Nevertheless, the old religion continued to flourish and to contribute in numerous ways to the working of Roman society until it was fatally weakened by the political and social crisis of the third century. This crisis, and the tendency of the Roman Empire to depend upon and encourage new sources of support, prepared the way for the emergence of Christianity, first as the religion of the Emperor, and then, after a period in which Christians and pagans were able to co-operate by emphasizing their common beliefs, as the official religion of the Empire.

Add to basketReprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 163-168. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Cover slightly rubbed and bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The administratio…n of the Roman Empire, even the post-Diocletianic Empire depended on the fact that the hulk of administration was done not by imperial officials hut by the authorities of self-governing cities. The cities were governed by a hereditary oligarchies, the curiales, who staffed the city council of every city in the Empire. In the course of the 4th century the councils were gravely weakened and became incapable of performing their traditional role. This development represents a crisis in the administrative history of the Roman Empire. Lack of evidence about municipal government during the 5th and 6th centuries hinders the historian seeking to find how the crisis was overcome. It is only in Egypt that we can watch the working of post-curial institutions in any detail. - Wikipedia: John Hugo Wolfgang Gideon Liebeschuetz FBA (born 22 June 1927) is a German-born British historian who specializes in late antiquity. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Cover slightly rubbed and bumped, stamp and stains on back side, author's name underlined, otherwise clean. - From the te…xt: The Agricola of Tacitus differs from other surviving biographies of antiquity. It exhibits some features more characteristic of an oration, yet the preface and composition of the biography as a whole recall Sallusts Iugurtha and Catiline. Then, the central biographical section of the work is interrupted by an excursus on the geography and peoples of Britain, and an historical outline of the Roman occupation of the island. It has been argued that the style of these chapters would be more appropriate to history than to biography, and this same historical style recurs in the pair of commanders speeches which precede the account of the battle of Mons Graupius. Finally, the narrative of Agricolas life is followed by a section working out the theme that Agricola was happy in the time of his death. This and the concluding address to the mourning family clearly belong to funeral oratory. - Wikipedia: John Hugo Wolfgang Gideon Liebeschuetz FBA (born 22 June 1927) is a German-born British historian who specializes in late antiquity.
