First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 16 pages. Published in 2016. Artist Book. The 94th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Elaine Ling. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Elaine Ling's "Habitacion Cubana". Her first, and posthumous, contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Elaine Ling was an exuberant adventurer, traveller, and photographer who felt most at home backpacking her view camera across the great deserts of the world and sleeping under the stars. Born in Hong Kong, she grew up in Canada and studied the piano, cello, and medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced medicine among various First Nations peoples in Canada's North and Pacific Northwest as well as on the other side of the world, in Abu Dhabi and Nepal. Elaine Ling passed away in August of this year after a long illness. This vibrant and colorful book comprises seven pairs of photographs made in Cuba, on two separate trips: The first in 2002, and the second in 2015. In each of the pairs, Ling presents a chosen subject in black-and-white, and again, thirteen years later, in color. The double layers of time and color create diptychs that can be contemplated endlessly, always with new discoveries to be made. Elaine Ling's photographs have been widely exhibited and published, and are included in the Permanent Collection of museums around the world, including those of the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris; Musee de la Photographie Charleroi, Belgium; Fotografie Forum International Frankfurt; Museet for Fotokunst Odense, Denmark; Centro Portugues de Fotografia Porto, Portugal; Scavi Scaligeri International Centre of Photography Verona, Italy; Fototeca de Cuba Havana; Lishui Museum of Photography; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas; and the Brooklyn Museum New York" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Elaine Ling collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size, original color print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by Elaine Ling. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce signed copy thus. 7 duotone plates, 6 color plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant Canadian photographers of our time. A fine copy. Add to basketHardback. Condition: New. How do women writers cope with changes and juggle the demands in their already full lives to make time for their lives as artists? In this anthology, noted female novelists, journalists, essayists, poets, and nonfiction writers address the old and new challenges of "doing it all" that face women writers as the twenty-first century approaches. With eloquence, sensitivity, and more than a touch of wry humor, Sleeping with One Eye Open relates positive stories from women who lead effective lives as artists, emphasizing how sources of inspiration, discipline, resourcefulness, and determination help them succeed despite the obstacle of "no time."The title essay, Judith Ortiz Cofer's "The Woman Who Slept with One Eye Open," defines the collection. Cofer relates the ways in which a mythological story from her Puerto Rican culture gave her confidence and courage, encouraging her creative success and emphasizing the rewards of "women's power" and personal strength. Denise Levertov's "The Vital Necessity" urges poets to make time for daydreams-essential, empowering creative food. Tillie Olsen offers a frank discussion of the pressures of work and expectations that too often sap creative energy. Tess Gallagher connects her mother's creative gardening with her own inspiration as a poet and the need for growth in her writing. Marilyn Kallet's interview with Lucille Clifton relates the personal strength that helped Clifton raise six children and publish her first book at the same time. This affirming collection offers a wealth of writing advice, given through honest accounts of perseverance and accomplishment.
